North America is enormous and difficult to see in a single trip. That's why we recommend taking to the road on a self-drive holiday in Canada or in the United States and really getting to know a region.
The United States is perhaps the king of the self-drive, from classic Route 66 road trips to sun-soaked drives along California's west coast. New England's spectacular natural world and historic cities make for a wonderfully scenic trip in the fall, or perhaps head to the epic Canyonlands or charming Carolinas, perfect at any time of year. Further north, lesser-explored Alaska offers myriad wildlife, from grizzly bears to moose, and sprawling, wild landscapes.
Route 66, Illinois
Further north still in Canada, a car or camper van is the perfect way to explore. Hit the road between Vancouver and Calgary, taking in the ultra-scenic vistas of Alberta and Banff National Park, or head to the forested peaks of British Columbia and marvel at the iconic Rocky Mountains. Less well-known but just as beautiful are the charming provinces of Atlantic Canada, where epic fjords, ultra-fresh seafood and pretty Acadian towns are just made for a self-drive, or, just east, the forests of Quebec offer fascinating French-heritage cities, sprawling lakes and ultra-scenic landscapes.
