Introduction
Whether you want a beach holiday in Vanuatu or are after an activity and adventure or diving holiday here, there's plenty to choose from. A natural playground of extraordinary features, holidays in Vanuatu have something for everyone.
The capital Port-Vila on the island of Efate has built up around a magnificent natural harbour. Fast becoming the gourmet capital of the South Pacific, it's also the home of kava, a cloudy narcotic rather than alcoholic beverage drunk all over the Pacific.
There are some beautiful coral reefs and excellent marine life throughout Vanuatu but the island of Espiritu Santo boasts one of the best shipwreck dive sites; the luxury liner the SS President Coolidge lies in clear water and is easily accessible. There's also easy access to the spectacular active volcano of Yasur on the island of Tanna; you can even drive to the crater rim.
The thin, rugged island of Maewo has black sand beaches and a mountainous interior. It's good for bird watching and for discovering ancient rites and traditional dances. Elsewhere, on Pentecost watch men land-diving; with lianas tied to their ankles, the men jump headfirst from towers 20-30m high in a forerunner of bungee jumping, whilst the women dance and stomp the earth to help bring about a bountiful harvest.
