Sail to the port city of Ålesund today, home to Norway's largest cod-fishing fleet and noted for its concentration of Art Nouveau buildings and proximity to the rugged, beautiful western fjords. Everything from guided walking tours among the decorative turrets and pastel-coloured buildings to ultra-scenic, mountain-valley drives are on offer to introduce you to this beautiful city that's all home to the one of Norway's most impressive fjords, the World Heritage-listed Geirangerfjord. Alternatively, opt for a boat ride to the unique islands of Giske and Godøy, Viking-era islands home to 12th-century churches, tiny fishing villages and ancient lighthouses.

Highlights include mountain-side walking trails that look over white-sand beaches, walking and bicycle among Leknes' archetypal red houses and boat rides that skirt the archipelago – all under the everlasting glow of the Midnight Sun. There's also the chance to visit Lofoten's famous local artists and glassblowers, explore the Viking Museum, go horse riding and even – at an additional cost – the chance to spot sea eagles on a RIB safari and view the islands from above on a VIP helicopter ride.

Day 7
Tromso

After breakfast, anchor in to what's often known as the Northern Lights capital of the world, Tromso. In summer it's just as magical, with chances to hike the coastal mountains, kayak inland rivers or among skerries in the Norwegian Sea, and even fish for cod, halibut and salmon, all enjoyed beneath the dazzling beauty of the Midnight Sun. Ultra-scenic drives offer the chance to pause at the 19th-century Polar Museum and Arctic cathedral before heading to the city's cable car to ascend to 1350 feet above sea level to the top of Mount Storsteinen, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and fjords below. We'd also highly recommend booking on to a summertime husky hike or RIB boat coastal adventure to nearby Sommarøy Island, home to ancient fishing villages and white-sand beaches.

Honningsvåg, North Cape

Sail to the northernmost point of mainland Europe today – situated inside the Arctic Circle, it's sure to be a true trip highlight. The true land of the Midnight Sun, the 24-hour sunlight means you've got endless hours to explore. In the morning, perhaps discover Magerøy Island's fishing villages and famous globe sculpture before exploring the North Cape Hall that overlooks the Barents Sea hundreds of feet below. Later, explore the North Cape Plateau, a steep slab of rock more than 1,000 feet above sea level, spotting reindeer, puffins and whales along the way, as well as the chance to explore the area's fjord-framed fishing villages, sample ultra fresh king crab on a RIB boat safari or head on an ATV adventure across the Arctic tundra.

Day 11
Trondheim

A colourful, historic capital of Norway, Trondheim's history reaches back to 997 AD, when it was founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason. It may be Norway's third-biggest city, but there's a welcoming and intimate feel here, with a photogenic waterfront, and glowing wooden warehouses adding old-time charm. A destructive fire laid to rest to old Trondheim's narrow wooden alleyways, but a flavour of the old city survives in the Bakklandet neighbourhood. Traditional timber houses and colourful wharves line up along the waterfront, painting a pretty picture with pistachio-green and turmeric-yellow licks of paint. Head to the Old Town bridge - Gamle Bybro - to enjoy the colourful lines of houses on both sides of the river, on your way to the gothic Nidaros Cathedral, which towers above the city, with its pointed, emerald-green spire punctuating the sky. The most northerly Gothic cathedral in Europe, aim to visit during one of the organ performances that rattle the beautiful stain-glass windows. And if time permits, take in the beauty of the city with a trundling tour aboard the most northerly tram in the world - Gråkallbanen.

Day 12
Åndalsnes

Åndalsnes is located at the mouth of the river Rauma, at the shores of the Romsdalsfjord, one of the fjords protected as a UNESCO world heritage site. Famous in the 19th century for salmon fishing, the Rauma flows through the Romsdalen Valley widely considered some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of Norway. Some 15 kms out of Andalsnes is the Trollstigen (Troll Road), a mountain road that climbs the pass between the Isterdalen and Valldal valley. It’s one of Norway’s major attractions due to the steep inclines and eleven hairpin bends, only open in the summer months. Equally exciting is a three hour round rail trip from Andalsnes to Dombas on the Rauma Railway line. A feast for the eyes from the comfort of a carriage, mountains, valleys and waterfalls come into sight, as the route follows the Rauma river. Trains thoughtfully slow down at the most photogenic spots. A feat of civil engineering the track passes over countless bridges and through tunnels, the train even performs a 180 degree turn underground.

Scenic drives and seaplane journeys are also on offer for the perfect introduction to the fjords for which this area is so famed.
