Cambodia

Lost cities, exotic allure

Cambodia tailor-made holidays

Introduction

‘Grander than anything left to us by Greece or Rome,' declared the French explorer Henri Mouhot, who rediscovered the fabled temple city of Angkor, the spiritual and cultural centre of Cambodia. These staggering ruins, some partly covered by trees and creepers, others salvaged from the jungle and free to explore during our Cambodia holidays, remain the country's major draw.

But there's plenty more to this beguiling country, which is moving on from the blood-tinted days of the Khmer Rouge and is an increasingly popular destination for travellers. Many of the old colonial buildings from the French protectorate are being restored in pretty towns like Kep, and awareness is growing of the allure of Cambodia's natural wonders alongside its architectural gems.

Rare Irrawaddy dolphins can be seen at Kratie on the Mekong River, an artery that flows through beautiful countryside dotted with small villages and pretty waterfalls. Cambodia's other great waterway is the Tonlé Sap, the ‘Great Lake' that provides food in abundance and floodwaters that, after the summer rains, turn this into the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia. Explore both on a tailor-made trip to Cambodia.

Elsewhere, coastal reefs shelter abundant marine life and forest-clad mountains are home to elephants, tigers, monkeys and bears. Of course you'll want to visit the mysterious remains of Angkor, but in the course of your Cambodia holiday leave a little time for some other attractions too.

What our clients say about our Cambodia holidays

  • We had a very good holiday and we are grateful to Adam for his help with it. All the hotels and the mix suggested worked very well. We were very pleased with the Halong Bay package on a small comfortable junk just for us as we would not have enjoyed the big tourist boats and the limit that puts on viewing those lovely islands. Our guide and driver in Siem Reap was knowledgeable, interesting on different topics and very anxious to please and the driver produced a good clean car. We recommend the visit to Chau Doc and the delightfully unsophisticated but very comfortable Victoria Hotel. The hotel on the waterway and the speed boat plus our drive to Chau Doc showed us the life of the Mekong very well without the constraints of communal tourist boat travel. Staff in the hotels and those we met outside were so very nice and welcoming.

Where to go in Cambodia

Phnom Penh

Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh is sprawling, vibrant and often chaotic, a compelling mixture of old and new. At the heart of an increasingly confident city is the enticing Sisowath Quay area, lined with French restaurants and local eateries, bookshops and boutiques, and the departure point for river…

Cambodia's South Coast

Along Cambodia's south coast, rainforests stretch down to the sea, meeting mangroves and coral reefs. Turtles, sharks and dugongs are among the marine life found here, while the inland mountains are home to bears, tigers, elephants and plentiful bird species.

Battambang and Tonlé Sap

The area around Siem Reap is well worth exploring after enjoying the delights of Angkor. The riverside city of Battambang comes complete with splendid French colonial architecture, nearby ruins and the popular ‘Bamboo Train'.

Siem Reap & Angkor Wat

Cambodia's most iconic landmark and cultural heart, Angkor Wat, is the reason that most people visit the charming riverside town of Siem Reap, in north-west Cambodia.

Max temp Min temp Rainfall

Cambodia has two distinct weather seasons - dry (October to April) and wet (May to September). March to June is hottest, with temperatures sometimes in excess of 35°C. Humidity is greatest during March and April, whilst the coolest months are October to December when daytime temperatures hover around 25°C. The dry, cool months are when visitor numbers peak, but Angkor Wat is particularly stunning in the wet season, surrounded by lush greenery, with moats brimming with water - and far fewer tourists.
