Zambia safaris

Introduction

Zambia is an adventurous and exciting, but also extremely safe and peaceful part of Africa in which to travel. Warm and welcoming people - who come from more than 70 distinct tribes - and a host of natural attractions, make this an excellent holiday choice, as increasing numbers of tourists are discovering.

This is the ‘real' Africa, where travel is at times rough around the edges, but charming in spite of the challenges. Landlocked Zambia takes its name from the Zambezi River, which rises in the northwest of the country and loops round to form a natural border with Zimbabwe in the south. The steady flow of Africa's fourth-longest river creates cascades and rapids, on which can be enjoyed some of the world's most exhilarating white water rafting. The river has also created Zambia's most recognisable and popular attraction, Victoria Falls, or the ‘smoke that thunders' as it's known locally.

Superb national parks are another feature of Zambia travel, with a choice of luxury lodges and safari camps in which to stay. Walking safaris were pioneered in South Luangwa National Park, the country's premier wildlife venue, and are a terrific way to experience the bush. Safari vehicles and riverboats are the other means with which to see the vast array of wildlife that calls this spectacular country home.

When to go to Zambia

During the dry season (May to October) you’ll find clear skies, comfortable temperatures and superb game viewing, with many animals seeking out the remaining waterholes. November brings the start of the rains, which continue until April. Known as the ‘emerald’ season, this is still a great time to visit: the grasses are green, the animals are birthing and prices are at their lowest.
