Nsefu Camp, South Luangwa National Park

Location

The camp is proof that, when it comes to location, coming first matters. Sharing the Nsefu sector with just one other camp, it’s carefully positioned on a sweeping meander of the Luangwa River. This means the perfect combination of peaceful solitude and populous wildlife. The Luangwa River, often described as the lifeblood of the national park, hosts crocodiles and hippos while the surrounding plains and woodland sustain zebras, giraffes, elephants and herds of buffalo often several hundred strong.

Accommodation

The camp’s lodging is comprised of only six thatch rondavels all with views over the mighty river. Built in traditional southern African style, the rustic exterior of the conical roof and wooden decking belie the elegant interior within. Fully air conditioned and complete with large beds and en suite bathrooms, these are no ordinary huts. Each room also comes with a veranda forcing you to make the decision whether to watch antelopes and zebras come for their morning drink from your bed or your front porch.

Dining

The camp offers a luxury hotel experience in a safari bush setting. If you stay onsite for lunch, instead of taking advantage of the packed picnics on day safaris, you’ll be able to enjoy a selection of light bites with a view of a herd of elephants making their daily river crossing. At dinner, the restaurant offers a mix of traditional Zambian flavours and western favourites. Also, with big cats most active in the cooler dusk, you can expect to see and hear lions and leopards from the comfort of your armchair.

Facilities

The camp’s real strength lies in its excellent range of activities. Whether by jeep or by foot, experienced local guides ensure you have the best chance of spotting animals. Seasonal boat tours also take you through the National Parks waterways to give you a hippo’s eye view of the region’s unique ecology. There are also trips to local villages and the nearby Wildlife Education Centre. With so much of Camp Nsefu’s facilities geared towards giving you uncompromising views, it won’t come as a surprise to hear that the well-stocked bar overlooks a waterhole popular with the local wildlife.
