Greece

Where island life meets ancient history

Greece tailor-made holidays

Introduction

Greece – both the mainland and the Greek Islands – covers a vast range of landscapes and myriad historical gems. Boasting an unrivalled legacy, the country is responsible for both drama and democracy. But, it's also a deservedly popular holiday destination, one which has lured sun worshippers and culture vultures for centuries, intoxicated by the country's unique heritage as well as the unmatched beauty of its islands.

The wonders of Ancient Greece

On the mainland, the capital Athens is considered the birthplace of Western civilisation. The 2,400-year-old Parthenon still dominates the skyline from its position on the Acropolis and the Theatre of Dionysus and Odeon of Herodes Atticus are close by.

The wonders of ancient Greece are just about visible everywhere though; the splendour of Delphi, home to the Oracle, the huge temple of Apollo, the monasteries of Meteora perched on pinnacles of rock and Mount Olympus, legendary home of the gods, stand out.

If you find yourself tired of temples, then try walking through the Mani or Arcadia Mountains on the Peloponnese peninsula. Alternatively embark on a Greek island cruise and hop from one idyllic getaway to another to see a wide variety of landscapes and a diverse selection of culturally rich sites.

The Greek Islands

Of the Greek Islands, Crete offers the best opportunities for hiking, with walks across rolling landscapes covered in wildflowers particularly pleasant and the dramatic Samaria Gorge a little tougher. The island is also home to numerous important archaeological sites at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys.

The Aegean Islands are characterised by white and blue villas; Lesbos also has beautiful beaches and therapeutic springs, Then, of the gerrner Ionian Islands, Corfu remains the most popular and developed, while Kefalonia is quieter and Ithaca, although the setting for the Odyssey, quieter still.

Over in the Cyclades you'll find a real Wexas favourite in Santorini, with its bright, white buildings and deep blue domes set against dramatic black volcanic sand. Nearby Mykonos is known for its cobbled streets and lively nightlife. Then there's the Sporades, home to the charming, unspoilt islands of Alonissos, Skiathos, Skyros and Skopelos.

Whichever you choose, let our Greece holiday specialists help you create a holiday to remember.

Greek Islands

Serene, sun-kissed and steeped in history, the Greek Islands have long been a Wexas favourite. Whether you're a sun-worshipper or a student of the ancient world, these mesmerising islands offer the perfect summer or autumn break.

When to go to Greece

"In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous."Aristotle Greece has a mild climate except in the mountainous northern interior where the winters are harsh and summers are brief. Winter temperatures average around 13° to 16°C in Athens and the south. Summers are hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 30° to 38°C or more at the height of July, but the islands in particular cool appreciably in the evenings, as northerly winds (meltemi) sweep in from the sea. The best times to avoid the tourist hordes and enjoy comfortable weather are from late April to mid-June and September to mid-October. In July and August …
