Katherine & Nitmiluk Gorge

Where ‘the Outback meets the tropics’

A must-see destination for nature lovers

Introduction

Often described as the place where ‘the Outback meets the tropics’, Katherine and the Nitmiluk Gorge area is home to diverse landscapes and unique ecosystems that set the scene for adventure activities like fishing and four-wheel driving, canoeing and camping, bushwalking and bird watching. The township of Katherine is set on the banks of the Katherine River, which flows down from the world-renowned Katherine Gorge, now known as Nitmiluk National Park.

This spectacular series of sandstone gorges and stretches of white sandy beach can be explored at leisure by foot or canoe, or as part of a boat trip or scenic helicopter flight. We suggest you stay closer to the ground though, so you’re able to swim at certain times of the year in the cool clear waters of places like Edith Falls, and to take in the abundance of flora, fauna and Aboriginal rock art that Nitmiluk has to offer. The park’s name means ‘The place of Cicada dreaming’ in the language of the Jawoyn, the local Aboriginal group who now manage the park jointly with the Northern Territory Government.
