Location
You’d be forgiven for thinking that quaint Arrowtown is a world away instead of the 20 minutes it is from Queenstown’s bustling centre. Swap business energy for historic charm in what is the city’s most peaceful neighbourhood. But that’s not to say that you’ll be stuck out; everything from fine dining restaurants and craft brewpubs to gourmet ice cream parlours and art house cinemas characterise this historic precinct. It’s a cultural richness predicated on a 19th century gold rush with tree-lined avenues retaining much of their original beauty. It’s all just two minutes’ walk away from your doorstep.
Accommodation
All-suite accommodation takes the town’s history and runs with it through private outdoor balconies, wrought iron chandeliers and exposed timber detailing. The WiFi is free, the beds king sized and the views of the mountainous surrounds and 70-year-old gardens are delightful. The minibars even come with the hotel’s signature cookies and ‘bottomless’ fresh ground coffee. The luxuries continue into the bathrooms, complete with underfloor heating, heated towel rails and designer toiletries. And, with trips to New Zealand tending to spill happily into long weeks away, the in-room washing and dryer machines are a nice touch.
Dining
Frommer’s New Zealand guide lauds Arrowtown House’s ‘superb cooks’ that ensure that guests ‘eat like kings’. The attention to detail is second to none; you won’t find a bean of instant coffee here. Instead, chefs seek to take you on a culinary journey through the country, with stops at the luscious berries, golden stone fruit and autumn pears that are the region’s calling cards. It’s all complemented by vegetables and herbs from the hotel’s very own gardens.
Facilities
Welcoming and boutique, at Arrowtown House you’ll be treated to plenty of homespun cheer. You’ll tuck into delicious canapés and enjoy some of New Zealand’s finest vintages across an indulgent wine menu. There’s also a range of beauty and spa treatments on offer – best taken after enjoying the area’s cycling, golf, fishing or skiing opportunities. Choose between everything from deep tissue workouts and holistic therapies to skincare therapies and hydrating facials.
