All the rooms at this splendid spa resort have perfectly framed views of the famed Arenal volcano – that great conical peak, surrounded by verdant rainforest in Costa Rica's wild interior.

Rooms, suites and villas also enjoy luxurious bathrooms with Jacuzzis, and sizeable hardwood lined bedrooms replete with rocking chairs, hammocks and most mod-cons imaginable. The hot springs that surround the hotel are another draw – rich in mineral salts and incredibly therapeutic and refreshing. There are several pools and waterfalls to luxuriate in while looking out over rainforests and serenity all around – one even has a wet bar, where the stools are formed from natural river rocks.

A more conventional but equally charming pool can be found in the garden, surrounded by gazebos with floaty curtains. Three restaurants provide everything from sushi to classic Italian dishes and local specialities; and the hotel organises trips into the park for bird and animal watching, as well as river rafting and zip lining.
