A Taste of Normandy & the Côte Fleurie for solo travellers

Summary

For a short break with a difference, Normandy is hard to beat – it truly is one of the unspoilt corners of Europe.

The region is lush and green, its countryside a patchwork of green fields, apple orchards, ivy-clad farmhouses, timber-framed buildings and pretty churches with distinctive Norman spires.

From our base in the charming Lisieux - a town with a rich heritage dating back to the Middle Ages, we visit Rouen, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, where William of Normandy set sail from in 1066 to conquer England. We'll also explore the beaches of Normandy - the site of the biggest-ever invasion, D-Day – and see the rusting remains of the Allies' landing equipment that remind us of the sacrifices made.

Spared the ravages of war, the charming port of Honfleur is delightful, with its merchants' houses lining the waterfront. From creamy cheeses to celebrated cider, you'll be spoilt for choice with some of the finest food and drink in France.

Normandy really does offer something for everyone.

DAY 4

Honfleur, the most picturesque of the Côte Fleurie's seaside towns, is a time-burnished place with a surplus of half-timber houses and cobbled streets that are lined with a stunning selection of stylish boutiques. Much of its Renaissance architecture remains intact—especially around the 17th-century Vieux Bassin harbor, where the water is fronted on one side by two-story stone houses with low, sloping roofs and on the other by tall slate-topped houses with wooden facades. Maritime expeditions (including some of the first voyages to Canada) departed from here; later, Impressionists were inspired to capture it on canvas. But the town as a whole has become increasingly crowded since the Pont de Normandie opened in 1995. Providing a direct link with Upper Normandy, the world's sixth-largest cable-stayed bridge is supported by two concrete pylons taller than the Eiffel Tower and designed to resist winds of 257 kph (160 mph).
