Introduction
Remote and seldom visited, eastern Burma shows visitors a rare and real sense of this complex country.
Shan State in particular, the largest state in Burma, is especially colourful and vibrant. Bordering China, Laos and Thailand, the region is the centre of a great mix of cultural influences and is home to numerous indigenous tribes, including the Wa, Intha, Pa-o, Lahu and Akha, each with its own language and distinctive cultural traditions.
All of this, painted across a rich canvas of valleys, hills and bold green landscapes, makes it well worth heading east.
