Location
Colca – a valley tucked away among the western Andes – is home to a host of superlatives. It lays claim to not only the world’s deepest canyon and highest chain of active volcanoes but its green hillsides are animated by some of the oldest Peruvian communities and its skies are streaked by one of the largest flying birds – the majestic condor. In between, its geography ranges from rocky fissures and barren steppes to terraced farmland and palm tree tropics. And, set on the banks of the River Colca, this luxury retreat is perfectly positioned to explore it all.
Accommodation
Drawing inspiration from pre-Inca structures, architects have made full use of local stone, straw and earth in thatched roofs and adobe walls that seem to become an extension of their environment. It’s all tucked away among grand sculpted gardens that come complete with splashes of flower colour and immaculately tiered banks. Once a collection of ancient agricultural terraces, the latter have even been declared a Peruvian National Heritage. It won’t come as a surprise that rooms feature pristine valley and garden views. And, in keeping with the hotel’s back-to-nature philosophy, interiors that are at once luxurious and rustic are both WiFi and TV free.
Dining
Continuing the room’s bucolic aesthetic, the lodge’s restaurant features exposed beams, whitewashed walls and flower displays. Dine to views out over those hundreds of verdant tiers. You’ll start the day with a buffet breakfast where freshly baked breads are complemented by regional jams and tropical fruits before moving on to a light lunch. For dinner head down to the riverside where typical Peruvian specialties are cooked on an open barbecue while the main restaurant dishes up Alpandina cuisine, a fusion of Andean flavours and Swiss culinary techniques.
Facilities
After a day spent visiting its alpaca farm, exploring the nearby pre-Inca ruins or cycling and trekking your way through Colca’s unique topography, you’ll return to a full suite of wellness options. Prime among them is the lodge’s hot springs, set just off its riverbanks. Featuring four, naturally heated pools, they reach temperatures of up to 80°C and are rich in minerals – including lithium – said to promote relaxation. Just note that they close during rainy season – January and February. If that’s not enough, book into a massage or beauty treatment at the spa before taking the plunge.
