Location
Dating back to 1574 and opened to guests by the resident Begg family in 2001, this characterful estancia is located on a working cattle farm high in the Sierras Chicas, part way between the rolling pampas of central Argentina and the snow-dusted peaks of the Andes. It’s a beautiful setting where guests can enjoy all manner of outdoor pursuits including horse riding, hiking and bird watching.
Accommodation
Simple, traditional yet extremely comfortable, accommodation at the estancia is totally in keeping with the history of the building. Rooms are tastefully furnished and adorned with antique books and leather chairs. Each room has a private bathroom and a wood burning stove or open fire for cool winter nights while in summer, as the temperatures rise, the adobe design works to keep rooms delightfully cool.
Dining
Whether it’s a traditional Argentinean asado (barbecue) or a three-course European-style feast, food plays an important part in estancia life. Organic vegetables, home made bread and free range eggs are all sourced from the farm, as is the beef which comes from the local herd. Own label wines are available, complemented by varieties from across Argentina. Lunch and dinner are served at a communal table – there are a maximum of 12 guests at any one time – and are usually hosted by one of the Begg family. Be sure to try one Kevin Begg’s famed wine tastings.
Facilities
The main draws here are the activities with trail riding, polo, self-guided hiking and bird watching all available. Once you’ve finished exploring there’s always the outdoor pool to enjoy, or head to hammock for few well earned hours of relaxation with a glass of wine and a good book.
