Location
Idyllically located in 12 acres of private grounds within the forested Langata suburb of Nairobi, Giraffe Manor is one of Kenya's most iconic hotels, offering a taste of the glamour of the 1930's safari era. Indeed, it's situated not far from the suburb of Karen, named after Karen Blixen of Out of Africa fame, which can easily be visited from the property - one of its suites is even named after the author. The stately exterior blends harmoniously with elegant interiors, beautiful gardens and sun terraces. History aside, the main attraction of the property is the herd of resident Rothschild giraffe who are notoriously inquisitive but also friendly - a great draw for adults and kids alike*.
Accommodation
The hotel's 12 rooms are all individually styled, with elegant furnishings, romantic four-poster beds and art-deco flourishes aplenty. The Finch Hatton Suite sleeps up to five - 2 adults and up to 3 children - as does the Karen Blixen Suite, which also opens out directly into a courtyard.
Dining
All stays come with full board while most drinks – house wines, beers, selected spirits and soft drinks – are also included in the price. Be sure to take afternoon tea on the terrace as the sun sets behind the Ngong Hills, while the chance to tuck into a delicious breakfast as inquisitive giraffes investigate through the manor's open windows is an experience not to be missed.
Facilties
Most of your stay will doubtless be spent exploring the grounds, and guided walks in the sanctuary and across the lawns to the Afew Giraffe Centre will ensure you don't miss a thing. There's also the chance to meet, feed and even adopt a baby elephant at the nearby David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Meanwhile, back at the manor, there's complimentary WiFi, while the on-site massage therapist is on hand to soothe any lingering aches from the day's adventures.
* the giraffe are wild and inhabit the indigenous forest that surrounds the property and as such interaction with the giraffe isn't guranteed
