In the heart of Union Square, the Handlery is wonderfully suited to those who prefer more refined accommodation from which to base their stay in San Francisco’s cosmopolitan buzz. Its grand, cream façade instantly hints at its impressive interior, where guests are greeted by a sprawling pillared lobby, with its branching myriad of corridors never overwhelming but rather traditional and elegant. Rooms are understated, though, all grey wood headboards and contemporary flooring, while wide screen TVs and plush bathrobes add to the charms – some even have balconies looking over the urban cityscape.
You don’t have to venture far for some all-Californian fare – the dark, intimately lit bar and restaurant make for a wonderful evening meal or simply somewhere to indulge in a pre-dinner signature cocktail. Charming black and white photographs adorn the walls, whilst on the table it’s classic American – expect the likes of jumbo crab cakes and braised short rib.
San Francisco’s weather is not completely reliable, but whether the famous mist has descended or the sun is shining – most likely in September and October – Handlery’s heated outdoor pool is a highlight. The cosy wood-fired sauna, available to pre-book, is a nice touch, too. But tear yourself away, because the delights of Union Square lie just a few metres away, from designer high end shops to the historic cable car that does its manual turnaround in the square before heading back to the bustle of Fisherman’s Wharf – an unmissable experience.
