About
Location
Situated on the route from Namibian capital Windhoek and the country’s south, the farm owes its existence to a nearby artesian water well and the seasonal Auob River. These water supplies support a fertile valley, an anomaly in an otherwise arid desert, which manifests best in the farmyard’s rich, green gardens. The Kalahari Desert itself spans 900,000 square kilometres across Namibia, Botswana and South Africa and is home to a diverse collection of migratory birds and animals including cheetahs, leopards and lions.
Accommodation
The farmhouse’s accommodation comprises of eleven standalone cottages built from local stone. Constructed in typical Cape Dutch fashion, a traditional Afrikaner architectural style found mostly in the Western Cape of South Africa, the cottages are as homely inside as they are outside. Warmed by an open fireplace, a treat in the cold Namibian evenings, the chalets are furnished with colourful patchwork quilts and en suite bathrooms. Each comes with a verandah that has views of the farm’s palm trees and green fields beyond.
Dining
The attached farm produces all the food served at the lodge. Fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden form the centrepiece of a menu that is rounded off by a variety of cheeses, salamis, sausages and biltong. Tender steaks, cured for 14 days, are particularly popular amongst guests. The farm’s produce is so well liked that it’s exported across the country. Food is paired with the farm’s very own fruit schnapps distilled on site or guests can enjoy a glass of wine from its well-stocked cellar either in the restaurant or next to the fireplace back at their chalet.
Facilities
Tours of the farm’s Self-Sufficiency Centre highlights the farm’s commitment to the local community and its social, natural and financial sustainability. The centre also offers scenic drives to experience the sun set over the burnished dunes at Gondwana Kalahari Park 30km away. Back on site, guests can relax poolside or in the gardens themselves. The farm’s cosy atmosphere extends to its homely bar where patrons enjoy a selection of vintage and rare drinks.
