Location
Set right in the middle of La Paz’s historic centre, La Casona Boutique is ideal for those looking to get swept up in the excitement of Bolivia’s de facto capital. You’ll even be treated to views of the stone domes of Iglesia de San Francisco, a basilica that dates back to the 1500s. From here, explore La Paz’s street markets and storied avenues as you make your way to 19th century cathedrals and grand cemeteries. Throughout, you’ll be treated to aged colonial architecture and bustling street scenes.
Accommodation
As a former 17th century convent, this is one of the city’s most characterful hotels. Its Hispanic colonial sensibilities are realised throughout, in courtyards, terraces and centuries-old artefacts scattered throughout the hotel. However, as a foil to the hotel’s history, rooms are decidedly contemporary. Expect clean lines, whitewashed walls and stylish colour schemes picked out against splashes of colour provided by traditional fabrics. Central heating, internet and cable TV bring this classic offering further into the 21st century. Larger groups are also well catered for in triple rooms.
Dining
The hotel’s main restaurant is set in what once was a family church, dating back to La Casona’s 17th century origins. Here, gourmet takes on national favourites are served alongside a collection of international favourites. Start the day with a freshly baked pastry or eggs cooked to order before moving on to a light lunch. Think indulgent sandwiches and gnocchi delicacies. For dinner, tuck into a chorizo dish or a prime steak accompanied by a Bolivian soup, all washed down with a fine regional wine.
Facilities
Throughout, stone floors, adobe walls and vaulted ceilings are complemented by hand-hewn stone features and carved walnut wooden detailing. It makes for an atmospheric backdrop to intimate stable yard seating, a terrace-with-a-view that’s ideal for sunbathing and even a small museum in the cellar, once the convent’s safe house. Throw in jazz performances and a cosy bar and this Bolivian favourite is perfectly set up to introduce you to the sights, sounds and tastes of La Paz.
