Location
Despite its convenient setting just a short hop away from the airport, golf course and city centre, the Shangr-La Abu Dhabi enjoys a secluded spot right on the shores of the Khor Al Maqta River. And, the hotel’s exotic garden grounds are interwoven with waterways plied by traditional Arabian boats – perfect for a relaxing cruise between the hotel's world-class facilities. However, it’s the private beach that’s the ultimate in relaxation and an ideal spot to catch the sunset over the canal.
Accommodation
To take full advantage of the hotel’s pretty setting, all of its 213 rooms feature a balcony or terrace, each with spectacular views over the canal. Back inside, although Arabian architectural flare plays out across rich fabrics and marbled bathrooms, it’s paired with modern facilities. There’s everything from complimentary WiFi and satellite TV to rainfall showers – separate to the deep-soaking tubs. The daily newspaper and welcome fruit are nice touches. For something extra special, look to the Executive rooms for a private garden terrace, the suites for opulent living areas or the villas for something truly ultra-luxurious. Spanning four bedrooms, expect a private pool, Jacuzzi and even a cinema.
Dining
With a collection of restaurants considered among the finest in Abu Dhabi, you’ll be treated to a full spread of dining experiences. The hotel’s headline act, Shang Palace, offers authentic Cantonese cuisine while Hoi An dishes up award-winning Vietnamese dishes and Bord Eau pairs quiet instrumentals with world-class French fine dining. For lighter bites, enjoy a snack poolside or head to the lobby lounge where teas, pastries and coffees are served up to qanun performances. There are also the club menus of Al Hanah Bar, matched with a selection of indulgent drinks and cigars – best taken on the balcony at sunset.
Facilities
As you’d expect from Shangri-La, there’s a full range of superb facilities. However, it’s perhaps the spa that’s the most impressive, having garnered recognition from the likes of Condé Nast and the What’s On Abu Dhabi Awards. The treatments range from body wraps to coffee scrubs, while steam rooms, Jacuzzis, saunas and hammams round things off. For something faster paced, head to fitness centre and book onto one of the classes, which include yoga, Zumba and Pilates. Or, simply relax with a choice of swimming pools. Lastly, if you book a Horizon Club room, you’ll be treated to the likes of complimentary limousine transfers, cocktails, canapés and light snacks.
