Location
Nestled in the Constantia Valley winemaking region, this boutique retreat is among South Africa's finest hotels. Ideally located just a 20-minute drive from the heart of Cape Town, it confers a unique offering of wine, golf, spa and history. Indeed, the original building dates back to 1682 and is the oldest farm in the region, having been lovingly restored and declared a National Monument.
Accommodation
Extensive renovations have transformed the hotel into the epitome of understated luxury. Premier rooms are spacious, light and luxurious with expansive patios and views across the vines and golf course to the valley and mountains beyond. For an elegant touch of historic detail, look to one of the manor suites, or choose a luxury villa; complete with private terrace and pool, they offer the perfect spot for relaxation and entertainment.
Dining
The long-standing Bistro Sixteen82 – one of the hotel’s two exceptional restaurants – offers seasonal dishes derived from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. And now, guests can enjoy a second signature dining experience, dedicated to the hotel’s 17th-century founder Catharina Ras. Bright ruby red, jade and burnt orange accents adorn the walls of Tryn, channelling the feisty spirit of its namesake. Expect classic dining with a touch of Asian and Middle Eastern flair from a menu designed by Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin.
Facilities
There are plenty of opportunities to get stuck in to some outdoors activities, including hiking, shark cage diving, helicopter flights and mountain biking. The award-winning championship 18 hole Steenberg Golf Club is situated on the same estate, walking distance to the hotel, amid the Constantia Valley's vineyard verdure. The course is consistently named one of the best in South Africa, with its perfectly manicured greens and fairways making full use of natural features. For further relaxation, there's the Steenberg Spa, with its five beautifully fitted rooms, each offering distinctive experiences. And finally, don't forget to relax and sample the wines in the Tasting Lounge with its water features and gardens.
