Location
Taj Campton Place is discreetly tucked away just off Union Square, close to many of the city’s premier galleries, high-end shops and endless variety of restaurants. With just over 100 rooms and nine suites, Taj Campton Place is smaller than many of its ‘boutique’ rivals, creating a homely, private atmosphere. It all starts in the lobby, where a cream and marble decor is delicately offset with splendid gold touches, enormous bouquets and chandeliers.
Accommodation
In the rooms, expect a light, airy and uncluttered feel, with handcrafted hardwood furniture, leather-topped writing desks, pure cotton linens, down-stuffed duvets and limestone-tiled bathrooms with deep-soaking tubs. There's also a wonderful view from most rooms of the bustling city streets, Union Square itself and the cable car lines that go straight through on their way to Nob Hill. The hotel’s new owners, the India-based Taj Group, have added Asian influences to the décor of both the rooms and public spaces. Their greatest impact, however, can be felt in the levels of personal service, which walks the line beautifully between professional and attentive and discreet and unobtrusive.
Dining
Not to be outdone by its rooms, the dining experience here is exquisite. Holder of a Michelin Star since 2011, Campton Place serves modern Californian cuisine with Mediterranean and Indian influences, taken in an ultra-swanky dining room. It features works by renowned local artists, while the wine list is curated by sommelier Richard Dean, one of only 150 active Master Sommeliers worldwide. In-room dining is also available, delivered, of course, with a level of service to rival any of the city’s best restaurants.
Facilities
If the hills of San Francisco don’t provide you with enough exercise, you can always head to the open-air, ninth-floor fitness terrace, which offers sweeping views of the city and Union Square, and is open 24 hours a day. The concierge team – also available around the clock – are incredibly knowledgeable and are always keen to help with suggestions for things to see and do in the local area.
