Fisherman’s Wharf is one of the must-see sights of San Francisco and this beautiful, historic building sits right at the heart of it, with views over the bay and the infamous Alcatraz prison. The sprawling lobby instantly appeals with its naval theme, with enormous boat sculptures lying alongside cosy fireplaces. Exposed red brick and Douglas Fir beams serve as the backdrop to a tastefully presented medley of vintage steamer trunks, antique telescopes, maps, compasses, braided ropes and wooden, spoked steering wheels, while bright blue bedrooms charm with nautical-themed features and many enjoy views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Bathrooms are home to delightful maritime wallpaper, whirlpool baths, and high-end C.O. Bigelow beauty products, and – this being health-conscious California – every room comes supplied with its own yoga mat.
The maritime theme extends to the hotel’s restaurant, the Blue Mermaid Chowder House & Bar, which offers no fewer than six different types of homemade chowder, all served in edible San Francisco sourdough bread bowls. Other specialities include steamed mussels and cioppino, San Francisco’s classic fish stew, perfectly enjoyed on the deck with sea views or around one of outside's fire-pits. To accompany the food, choose from a selection of craft beers, Californian wines and cocktails; they even have Mai Tai on tap.
For some relaxation, there's a wide range of spa treatments available in-room, all featuring Kerstin Florian organic and environmentally friendly body and skin care products, and you’ll find a well-fitted gym on the second floor that’s open 24 hours a day. To learn more about the maritime history of the area, head to the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park museum and visitor centre, adjacent to the lobby. Perhaps head out on the walking and jogging paths outside the hotel before enjoying complimentary wine tasting, hosted by the hotel’s sommelier in the comfortable living room every evening at five. Ghirardelli Square and Pier 39 are just around the corner, as are the ferries to the prison island of Alcatraz – be sure to book a few months in advance to guarantee a space – and North Beach, a buzzing Italian-heritage neighbourhood, is just a 20-minute walk away. For high-end shopping, try taking the cable car over the hill to Union Square.
