Torngat Mountain Base Camp & Research Station

Immerse yourself in the wilds of Labrador as you explore the Torngat Mountains National Park, a wilderness coast of towering fjords and turquoise lakes.

The Nanuagak or ‘little polar bear’ itinerary takes you from Goose Bay to Saglek and then onto the Torngat Mountain Base Camp & Research Station. While here, spend your days exploring first-hand the Inuit culture and heritage with a range of excursions including a visit to Hebron; a national historic site and the remaining Moravian building that remains one of the most historically significant mission-built structures in the province. Hebron remains a very special place for many Labrador Inuit.

Other trips explore North Arm, considered one of the jewels of the Torngat’s with cascading waterfalls and a lake with indigo-blue waters that is also often the place to spot black bears, Sallikuluk, which is a focal point of the Inuit cultural landscape and whose archaeological sites span more than 5,000 years of occupation. Nachvak Brook is a spectacular excursion to the beginning of the 100-year-old Inuit trail and a popular spot for the polar bears.

Location

The Torngat Base Camp is reached by flight from Goose Bay on a Wednesday from mid July to the end of August.

Accommodation

The Torngat Mountain Base Camp & Research Station is a working base camp and accommodation is in one of the most comfortable, insulated and heated Design Shelters or Intershelter tents. Base camp facilities include a shower block and dining room.
