Location
Though just seven miles from central LA, the laidback beach community of Santa Monica feels a world apart. The Viceroy Santa Monica has a prime location on Ocean Avenue, a short walk from both the beach and the shops, bars and restaurants of fashionable Third Street Promenade. The famed Santa Monica Pier and the weekend Farmers’ Market (considered by many food professionals to be one of the best in the country) are also tempting distractions from lounging around the pool.
Accommodation
Rooms come complete with Egyptian cotton sheets, pillow-top mattresses and down duvets on the king-size beds, as well as fully stocked bars and body and hair care products by Neil George. While the pool and city views are nothing to be sniffed at, we recommend upgrading to an ocean view room for that quintessential California experience. To really splash out, opt for a Viceroy Grande Room or an Empire or Monica Suite, which have marble wet rooms, whirlpool baths and flatscreen TVs in the bathrooms.
Dining
Cast Restaurant takes the fashionable concept of street food and elevates it to a far higher level. Dishes are made for sharing and are often paired with speciality cocktails and craft beers. It’s a real locals’ favourite and can get lively in the evenings, as can the retro-glam Cast Lounge, found just off the lobby and extending beside the pool. If you can, visit on a Wednesday or Thursday when Executive Chef Tony Di Salvo prepares a famers’ market tasting menu that shows off the freshest Santa Monica ingredients. Outside, the poolside cabanas are perfect for cocktails, brunch or a light lunch.
Facilities
The 24-hour gym facilities at Viceroy Santa Monica mean you need never fall behind in your own fitness regime. The concierge can even book you a personalised training session on Santa Monica Beach, yoga and Pilates, or surfing lessons with qualified professionals. You’ll also find two outdoor pools – romantically lit at night when pool parties are hosted by resident and guest DJs – as well as bikes to borrow for exploring the local area.
