Ketchikan
Known as the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan has its roots firmly in the Alaskan fishing industry and the city is still home to several historic canneries. But there’s plenty more to see here, too. Your included excursions range from trips into the rainforest to oyster farm visits and the chance to catch a glimpse of cruising whales or sunbathing seals on a kayaking trip around the Tatoosh Islands. Alternatively, head out in search of sea eagles or fish for crab, halibut or octopus in the Bering sea aboard the Allutian Ballad. Fancy something a bit special? The state capital, Juneau enjoys a majestic setting – the Mendenhall Glacier sprawls down from the Juneau Icefield providing a stunning backdrop to this remote city, lost among the Alaskan wilderness. Take a trip on Mount Roberts Tramway to a viewpoint 1,800 feet above downtown Juneau – you can take a stroll on the Alpine trail and view the islands and distant waterways. Then there’s the chance to head out in search of migrating humpbacks or visit the Iditarod Sled Dog camp to see the beauty of Sheep Creek valley on a specially designed wheeled cart pulled by highly trained Alaskan huskies.

It’s all set to a backdrop of soaring, snow-flecked peaks which loom above a tree line of mighty pine forests. The choice of excursions here is almost endless, with options ranging from rainforest bike and horseback rides to zip-lining adventures and even an introduction to rock climbing. If that all sounds a little too energetic, why not take a scenic trip on the White Pass Railway or explore Skagway’s downtown heritage on a streetcar city tour?

Sitka
Once part of the Russian Empire until 1867, Sitka still shows its Russian History. The onion-shaped dome of St. Michael’s church is a story of the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska. Today it holds an impressive collection of Russian Orthodox art and is a memorable sight against the sub-arctic skyline. Discover Alaska’s natural beauty and wildlife while cruising through Sitka Sound, keeping eyes peeled for sea otters, or maybe even catching sight of a bear with its cubs. For a closer look at the region’s wildlife and nature, choose between kayaking, rainforest hikes, Zodiac tours and ocean rafting. Alternatively, upgrade for the likes to wilderness fly fishing trips, volcano hikes and catamaran adventures.

Cruise the Hubbard Glacier
Located just off the coast of Yukutat, the Hubbard Glacier is Alaska’s largest, measuring more than six miles wide at its face. It’s also been one of the state’s most active in past 30 years, having two major surges which were big enough to cross the bay, turning the fjord into a lake and threatening to flood the sleepy coastal settlements. Spend today onboard, taking in the glacier’s majesty from up on deck, paired with some to relax and indulge as you sail ever closer to Seward and your journey’s end.
