Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel has been famous for its diving opportunities ever since the legendary Jacques Cousteau praised its reefs in the early 1960s. The largest inhabited island in Mexico, Cozumel remains a diver’s paradise, but there’s plenty here for non-divers too. It's home to Mayan cultural hotspots, eclectic neighbourhoods, and pristine white-sand beaches.
For a dose of history, visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed ruins of Chichen Itza, a remarkably well-preserved, centuries-old Mayan centre. Alternatively, trek through the mangroves to the Mayan ruins of the Faro Celerain Ecological Reserve. For something a bit more relaxed, wander the waterfront avenue of Rafael Melgar and the main square of Plaza del Sol to shop for local crafts, jewellery, Mayan replicas and tequila.

Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala
There are many options today to explore Guatemala. Travel from the port city of Santo Tomas de Castilla through the countryside to UNESCO World Heritage-listed Quiriguá to see eighth-century stelae (upright monuments) and pyramids. Birdwatchers will flock to Las Escobas Springs within the Cerro San Gil, a protected rainforest home to over 400 species. For yet more natural beauty, visit Rio Dulce National Park, an ecological reserve teeming with diverse flora and fauna.
If you’re looking for history, take a boat ride to the Castle of San Felipe, a 17th-century fort. For a relaxed day, simply browse the shops of nearby Puerto Barrios for handmade crafts and perhaps stop to sample a plate of picante black beans and rice at a local restaurant.

Harvest Caye is a mangrove-covered private island off the coast of Belize, perfect for exploring at a leisurely pace. Belize has no shortage of natural beauty, but this island is a real gem. You can encounter wildlife in the island’s mangrove estuaries or by snorkelling in its surrounding reefs. If you’re feeling adventurous, head out for an exhilarating day of water sports on the lagoon. For those looking for pure relaxation, there’s always the option to bask under the Caribbean sun on Harvest Caye’s untouched sandy beach or simply take a stroll along the island village and marina.

Falmouth, Jamaica
Falmouth allows you to delve into the laid-back, Jamaican vibe while also taking in the tumultuous history of this incredibly well-preserved colonial town. During the late-18th and early 19th- centuries, Falmouth was one of Jamaica’s busiest ports. Nearly 100 nearby plantations manufactured rum and sugar for export to Britain from its port. Take a leisurely stroll through Falmouth’s historic district to see evidence of this time in the form of superbly maintained Georgian mansions and small wooden houses.
For a taste of Jamaica’s culture, try out the spicy jerk cuisine, which you’ll find at many food stands and restaurants near the port.
