Heraklion (Crete), Greece
The capital city of Greece’s largest island, Heraklion is close to a couple of Crete’s must-see sights; the state-of-the-art Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to treasures of Minoan civilization and finds covering over 5,500 years of Crete’s history; and the Palace of Knossos, a centre of Minoan power that dates back to 2000 BC which is revered as the location of the mythic Minotaur’s Labyrinth. Dubrovnik, Croatia
Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century by refugees from Epidaurum (today’s Cavtat). It is known worldwide for its unique marble-paved squares, tall houses, steep-cobbled streets and fountains. The city walls, once used to as protection against its enemies, now keep motorists at bay, making strolling a real pleasure. UNESCO named the Old City a World Heritage Site and Dubrovnik’s beautiful historic buildings and squares have been restored to their former glory.
