New Island and West Point Islands
Settled by British explorers in 1765, these weather-beaten islands are home to a wealth of wildlife, from black-bowed albatross to Commerson’s dolphins. There’s a scattering of people, and sheep, but the star attractions are surely the fur seals, burrowing rockhopper penguins, magellanic penguins and imperial cormorants who roost in the jagged coastal cliffs. Explore New Island, known for its extraordinary bird and wildlife, with Zodiac cruises with the Silversea Expedition team where you'll land on sandy beaches to spot five species of penguin, seals and dolphins. You may also like to join a Silversea guide on a kayak paddle, that includes a stop at Albatross Island. Remember, all excursions can be easily organised directly from on board the ship, either before or during your cruise.

Alternatively, it can all be explored on a guided bus tour that pauses at the Whale Bone Arch, the 1982 Battle Memorial and the museum, while further highlights include trips out into the wilderness to spot the thousands of penguins who migrate here, as well as a tour of the Battlefields, the epicentre of the Falklands War.

Days
18-19
Nightingale and Gough Islands
Uninhabited except for the majestic, million-plus seabirds that call this castaway island home, it doesn't get much more raw and remote than Nightingale Island. Adrift between South America and Africa, the island takes its name from British explorer Gamaliel Nightingale and is the smallest of these distant volcanic lands. Craggy coastline and rugged cliffs rise imposingly from the waters of the South Atlantic, as you approach this remote volcano island - which erupted most recently in 2004. Largely free from human interference, Nightingale Island is known for the abundant birdlife that thrives here and is a shelter for some of the world’s rarest species, such as the rare canary-like Nightingale bunting and Wilkins’s bunting - which are found only here. Rockhopper penguins patrol the rocks and hop over boulders and you may also see the graceful glide of Atlantic yellow-nosed albatrosses, and the plunges of great shearwaters.
You may struggle to find Gough Island on a map. This almost entirely uninhabited volcanic island - aside from a small group of hardy researchers live that live here - is full 1,700 miles to the west of Cape Town. Expect to see a stunning array of seabirds, including endemic species like the Gough moorhen and Gough bunting. Gough Island forms part of a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site and serves as a vital island sanctuary for rare and celebrated birdlife.
