Relaxation
Between dense forests, hot springs, pristine beaches and mile upon mile of hiking trails, Great Barrier Island certainly packs a lot in. Your base to explore it all will be the island’s premier luxury lodge, EarthSong. After an included transfer, you’ll settle into one of just three Ocean View Suites for stunning views across the Hauraki Gulf to the distant shores of Auckland and the North Island.
Each evening you’ll be treated to pre-dinner cocktails and an immaculately presented four course meal. Chef Trevor Rendle, following the seasons, supplements fare from the lodge’s gardens with local organic produce, prepared using culinary techniques that honour the integrity of the ingredients. The table olives and extra virgin olive oil from EarthSong’s grove are a particular highlight. On the second day, after a gourmet breakfast, you’ll head out to explore the island with a choice of activities. Perhaps take a guided tour of Glenfern Sanctuary’s 150 acres. Here, an extensive trail system disappears into a forest of 9,000 native trees – home to many rare native birds, from black petrels to brown teals.
You’ll be able to cross a swing bridge into the very crown of a 600-year-old giant kauri tree and still have time to explore Windy Canyon and the east coast beaches on your way back. Alternatively, a trike tour will take you along scenic roads with views of wildly beautiful coastlines and beaches, stopping off at local art galleries, museums and cafés. After, return to EarthSong to relax and indulge with cocktails and dinner on your last night before your return transfers to Auckland on your final day.
