Often overlooked in favour of its headline-grabbing neighbours, the town of Kamloops, high up in British Columbia’s Rocky Mountains, offers a surprising array of attractions in a region of outstanding natural beauty. From pioneering wineries and craft breweries to heritage railways and a wildlife park home to Arctic wolves, bighorn sheep and even a rare Kermode spirit bear, it’s a place to embrace nature, and escape the crowds. This four-day extension to be easily tagged on many of our Canadian Rockies fly-drive holidays. Speak to our specialists to find out how.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Kamloops

Arriving into Kamloops, you’ll make your way to your accommodation for a three-night stay. With a swimming pool, hot tub, two bar-restaurants and views out to the Thompson River, it’s a relaxing and ideally located base exploring the town and its Rocky Mountains surrounds. Once you’ve settled in, spend the day exploring at your own pace, perhaps calling into the Secwepemc Museum and its 2,000-year-old Shuswap winter village, or learning about the region’s flora and fauna at the BC Wildlife Park, an interactive wildlife experience that allows you to get up close and personal with some of BC’s indigenous species, including the very rare Kermode (spirit)bear named Clover. The BC Wildlife park is the most successful breeder of Burrowing Owls in North America and over 60% of the animals found in the park were rescued for various reasons. Come visit and learn about the 65+ species of indigenous animals including the grizzly bear, black bear, moose, cougar, buffalo and more.

Day 2
Kamloops Wine Trail

Today we recommend heading out onto the Kamloops Wine Trail, which showcases three of the Thompson Valley’s pioneering wineries. With a backdrop of sprawling vineyards, rolling hills and hoodoo rock formations, you’d be hard pressed to find a more scenic setting for a day of optional owner-led tours and tastings. For a truly indulgent experience, why not enjoy a wine-paired picnic in the vineyards before returning to Kamloops via scenic hiking trails to spend an afternoon exploring the town’s famers’ markets and brewpubs, the perfect ending to a truly delicious day.

Stay: Wexas Choice - Sandman Signature Hotel

Day 3
Around Kamloops

Your final full day in Kamloops sees you take to the open road to explore the historic Copper Mine Loop. Relive the days of the 19th-century Gold Rush as you discover the remnants of the original Cariiboo Wagon Road, look out to sweeping views across the painted hills of Cache Creek and take in the First Nations exhibits at the excellent Ashcroft Museum. Then, in the afternoon, head on to Logan Lake for gentle waterside strolls or a more active hike before relaxing lakeside at the Lac Le Jeune Provincial Park, the perfect spot for an early evening picnic.

This evening maybe venture into the moonlight on a guided hike. Explore the outdoors on foot through the trees and between the hoodoos with a head lamp and the glow of the moon showing the way. Enjoy the serenity of the silence or the sharp call of the wild.
