For the best Milford Sound experience, head off the beaten bow-wave track with an overnight stay on its gentle waters. Transferring from Queenstown, you’ll depart from its eponymous wharf in the late afternoon to cruise the full length of the sound. Along the way, your specialist nature guide will explain the history and geology of the area’s spectacular waterfalls, rainforests, mountains and wildlife – there’s everything from seals to, if you’re lucky, dolphins and penguins. You’ll even anchor in a sheltered cove to get up close to the scenery with a kayak or tender boat tour. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a carvery buffet before the stars come out overhead. After a hearty breakfast, head back out to the Tasman Sea and the fjord’s stunning landscapes before retracing your steps back to Queenstown.
