Introduction
For many people, travel is its own adventure, especially when exploring independently. But whether you want to get off the beaten track, try a new sport or explore the wilderness, Wexas can help you blaze a trail so that you can focus on enjoying your discoveries.
Unlike in some other parts of the world, trekking or hiking in New Zealand – often referred to by kiwis as ‘tramping’ – can mean experiencing the truly remote. One-third of the country is protected National Park, and the majority of parks are without cafes, nearby towns or other amenities. Yes, there is jet boating, para-gliding, caving – but to purists, the true adventure attractions can be found in the natural landscape, and sampled simply by putting on your boots and going for a walk.
Try jet boating – an adventure sport born and bred in New Zealand
Jet boating was invented in 1950s New Zealand by a farmer with a need to manage his land down-river without catching a propeller on the often shallow river beds. Today it is an adventure sport almost unique to New Zealand, and a ride on one can only be described as a sort of natural world rollercoaster – with drivers taking passengers up rivers, through rapids, and taking narrow bends at speed. It’s a wonderful thrill, and even better requires no skill on the part of the passengers. There are several providers to choose from and they often provide the best way to explore the waterfalls and rapids – the most daring being the Huka Falls jet boat at Lake Taupo in the North Island.
Ski and snowboard at Lake Wanaka
Although Queenstown is New Zealand’s home of winter sports, it’s often more of a basecamp or jumping off point for those wishing to ski or board in the mountains further afield. Most usually travel on to Lake Wanaka - cited by National Geographic as one of the world’s top 25 ski resorts. Lake Wanaka offers access to five different ski areas and the world’s largest heli-skiing region outside of North America. And as it is only an hour from Queenstown it’s possible to incorporate a day or two of ski adventure in your trip without adding much travel time.
