Introduction
Large and wild in lots of places, North America is ideal for animals, especially big, raise-the-hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck animals in substantial quantities.
In Canada, there are large numbers of animals to spot. Bears are firm favourites, with black, grizzly and polar all present here. Herds of caribou, moose and must oxen also patrol the vast wilderness, pursued by wolves, whilst whales can be spotted off the coast.
Beautiful British Columbia is home to plenty of animals. Vancouver Island is the place to travel to in order to see whales or dolphins. In the Rockies travel to the Kananaskis and Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, whilst in Manitoba, Churchill on the shores of Hudson Bay is best for polar bears. Beluga, numerous whales and lots of seabirds also migrate through this stretch of coast too. Alpatok Island and Nain in Newfoundland and Cambridge and Resolute Bay in Nunavut are also good bets for seeing this majestic bear in its natural habitat.
In the USA, there are several states that are particularly good for wildlife holidays. Alaska is the predominant place to see animals though, with Denali National Park, Katmai National Park and the Kenai Fjords particularly popular. Moose are more abundant than people whilst marine wildlife and seabirds are also plentiful here. To see polar bears though, head to Barrow, a short flight from Fairbanks.
Elsewhere, Yellowstone is home to bears, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, mountain lions and lynx; Yosemite National Park has some spectacular scenery and wildlife; Kansas is home to two of the largest wetlands in the world; Louisiana boasts two major bird migration flyways making it one of the best bird watching spots in the country; Isle Royale on Lake Superior in Michigan is home to wolves and moose and Oklahoma and the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge are good for bison, Rocky Mountain elk and white-tailed deer.
These are just a handful of the options available though. You can also tailor-make your wildlife holiday in North America by adding a city stay, activity and adventure holiday or other excursion; talk to a destination specialist to see what we can do for you.
