Autumn in Europe
As Europe slips towards winter, the Southern Hemisphere comes into its own. That said, harvest festivals make visits to the likes of Tuscany, and Rioja's vineyards particularly pleasurable, while Portugal, Malta and Andalucia's Moorish wonders still enjoy great weather. Meanwhile, autumn in Scandinavia serves up superb fall foliage coupled with magical displays of the Northern Lights.
New England fall
While many parts of the world are spectacular in autumn, few can match the sheer beauty of New England. Reaching their peak in October, the reds, golds and ambers that light up the forests of the USA's northeast corner are simply stunning, although you’ll need to book early to get the best accommodation. Elsewhere, Yellowstone, Japan, Quebec and Atlantic Canada offer quieter alternatives. In the latter, you’ll also catch the tail end of whale season. You can also beat the crowds at Utah’s national parks, while both California and Hawaii are idyllically sunny.
October on the beach
If you're after some October sun, you'll find plenty to go around in the Caribbean, despite it being the low season. It's also a great time to pick up a deal, while the resorts will be noticeably quieter at this time of year. Mauritius, too, is a great bet, with October's fine weather showcasing the island at its glittering best.
