Lake Bunyonyi

Visit Lake Bunyonyi

Introduction

Uganda has been called a land of lakes, because almost a third of the country is covered by water. Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, dominates the southern border of the country, while Lakes Edward and Albert lie to the west.

Lake Bunyonyi, close to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, is smaller than these but an excellent Uganda travel choice nevertheless. Meaning ‘place of many little birds', Bunyonyi is one of the deepest lakes in Africa and certainly lives up to its name - with around 200 bird species. It's not surprising therefore to learn that Bunyonyi has become a popular destination for bird watching holidays.

Uganda's national bird, the crested crane, is a common sighting, while many other birds can be seen from the lakeshore or on dugout canoe tours. Sport fishing and sailing are other popular activities on the lake.
