Introduction
Luxor stands on the site of the ancient Thebes and its many temples and tombs have given the city its unofficial title as the world's biggest open-air museum. Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, on the west bank of the Nile close to Luxor, are often included in tailor-made Egypt travel itineraries and plenty of time should be allowed for both.
Across the river from Luxor are the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, the resting place of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs and their consorts. It's possible to enter some of the tombs, including that of King Tutankhamun. Taking a dawn hot air balloon flight over the west bank provides a different perspective, with beautiful early morning light falling on the temples and villages. It's an unforgettable way to take in Luxor and its surrounds.
