Introduction
The Majete Wildlife Reserve in the Lower Shire Valley of southern Malawi is an intensely monitored, fenced off reserve. A number of important species have been successfully reintroduced and the park is now one of Malawi's best areas for wildlife watching.
The reserve covers an area of rugged, bushy terrain that includes the Shire River to the east and the Kapichira Falls, which stumped Livingstone on his journey up the Shire in 1859. It's a classic African safari park, with abundant wildlife that includes nyala, sable, elephant, waterbuck, buffalo and eland among other central African species. In recent times, seven endangered black rhino were reintroduced into the park and have successfully bred. There are now 11 rhinos and more introductions of this critically endangered beast are planned.
