Introduction
Vilanculos is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago and was named after a local tribal chief called Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke. An international airport on its outskirts serves this small and friendly town, with daily connections to Maputo and Johannesburg.
Vilanculos offers the chance to try water sports or chill out at luxury beach hotels and lodges located in and around the archipelago. The marine park of Bazaruto is one of Mozambique's natural treasures, its clear seas home to abundant tropical fish, beautiful coral and large marine species such as dugongs. Its proximity to these underwater delights makes Vilanculos a good base for diving and snorkelling holidays.
