Introduction
Mangroves, rainforest and beaches are contained within the boundaries of Sarawak's oldest national park, Bako National Park, located on the Muara Tebas Peninsula close to Kuching.
The park is relatively small, but has a great variety of plant and animal life, and is a wonderful place to spend a few days discovering secluded coves and rocky headlands overlooking the South China Sea, or looking for some of the 150 bird species that live here.
Wind and waves have hewn out spectacular arches and sea stacks along the coast, but the forest itself is not to be missed. There's an extensive network of colour-coded forest trails and this provides good wildlife-spotting opportunities - there are around 250 proboscis monkeys in the reserve, and they can be seen foraging on the beaches in the evenings.
