Introduction
The Ijen Plateau in north-eastern Java is a vast volcanic region dominated by the three cones of Ijen, Merapi and Raung.
Java's finest coffee, both arabica and robusta varieties, are produced in this thickly forested alpine area and a number of plantations can be visited.
The biggest draw, however, is the turquoise sulphur lake of Kawah Ijen, which sits at 2,148 metres above sea level, surrounded by the sheer crater walls of Gunung Ijen itself.
