Introduction
Kinabatangan, Sabah's longest river, is another good place to see some of Borneo's incredible wildlife.
Mangroves and oxbow lakes along the meandering river have created an ideal environment for crocodiles, tree snakes, monkeys, monitor lizards and a wealth of birdlife that includes egrets, storks, ospreys, owls and hornbills.
Proboscis monkeys are the star turn here, however, and the Kinabatangan River is considered by many to be the best place to see these amorous monkeys in the wild. Characterised by their long noses, the proboscis monkeys are a little reminiscent of Pinnochio - albeit simian versions living among the dense trees that extend inland from the banks of the Kinabatangan.
Orangutans and pygmy elephants are other possible sightings on jungle or river safaris.
