Introduction
Lake Toba, the world's largest volcanic lake, lies in a great crater. The result of a tremendous eruption 70,000 years ago, which was responsible for a dramatic change in the earth's climate - it may even caused the last Ice Age.
The surrounding area is home to the Batak Toba people and their distinctive forms of architecture, carvings and handicrafts, which can be found around the rim of the lake and notably on Samosir Island at the lake's centre.
Nearby you'll also find Sipisopiso, Indonesia's tallest waterfall, which crashes into the lake 120 metres below.
