Introduction
This wildlife-rich region of deep jungle and pretty waterfalls is located close to the Thai border, away from the well-travelled tourist routes.
One of the best sites is Tatai Falls, reached by kayak or boat along the Tatai River or by hiking trails through the virgin rainforest. In the rainy season powerful rapids form here, while rock pools appear in the dry season.
The picturesque river valley and the surrounding Cardamom Mountains - one of the last strongholds of the Khmer Rouge - are home to many threatened animal species, including the Siamese crocodile, Indochinese tiger, clouded leopard, Asian elephant and sun bears. Birdwatchers also have plenty to enjoy, with around 1,400 bird species found in this part of Cambodia.
