Introduction
Enormous lakes, unspoilt beaches and mountain ranges are just some of the natural attractions to be found in Gippsland, occupying Victoria's eastern corner. The region inspires the most pleasant activities. Wilson's Promontory, just three hours from Melbourne, has numerous walking trails through bush and coastal scenery, but the area is also gourmet country, with plenty of wineries, farmers' markets and cheese makers.
There's also skiing at Mount Baw Baw, historic gold towns and maritime villages to explore; while Gippsland's waterways - five major rivers that feed the Gippsland Lakes - offer swimming, fishing, boating and sailing. Then there's Croajingolong National Park, a World Biosphere Reserve with a lengthy and lovely coastline and a diverse hinterland teeming with birdlife. While the park is a great place for walking, Gippsland is also notable for some stunning drives. Take the Sydney Melbourne Coastal Drive and see whales, seals and penguins; or the Great Alpine Road and wind past lofty mountains, valleys, forests, vineyards and farms on your way to the pounding ocean.
