Introduction
Central America is the ancestral home of the Maya people; an ancient civilisation that still clings on in Guatemala, especially in the small communities living in and around Lake Atitlan. Located in the Guatemalan Highlands, an area stretching from Antigua to the Mexican boarder, Atitlan is awash in ancient tradition and lore.
With the exception of Panajachel, tourism has hardly reached this region and the traditional occupation of farming remains the daily routine for many inhabitants. Living in predominantly Mayan speaking communities, women dress in colourful garments, little changed from what their ancestors would have worn centuries ago.
Visiting this region you can easily feel you have stepped back in time to a forgotten age. We recommend you take your time here to really soak up the atmosphere of the area; set against the volcano-fringed waters of Lake Atitlan itself.
