Introduction
Morelia was one of the first cities founded after the Conquest, and despite its large indigenous population, feels Spanish - with broad streets of 17th-century mansions and outdoor cafes sheltered by arcaded plazas; the colonial architecture captivates visitors and locals alike.
It is however a cradle of the Mexican independence movement and among the first cities to fall.
The city's massive Cathedral is a particular draw. The pink cantera stone Cathedral façade is nothing short of spellbinding, the two soaring towers are said to be the tallest in Mexico, while inside a German organ with 4,600 pipes is one of the largest in Latin America.
