Introduction
Orange Walk, also called 'Sugar City', gives its name to the diverse northern region traditionally involved in the sugar production industry. The Orange Walk region is home to the only sugar cane refinery in Belize, with large swathes of the countryside dominated by this stereotypically Caribbean crop.
The Rio Bravo Conservation Project protects much of the remaining forest, covering a vast area of unexplored ruins, home to Ocelots, Jaguars and Tapirs. With over 400 species of birds calling these forests home, this is the best place in Belize to come in search of an eco-tourism adventure.
This region will especially excite those who are looking to experience more of Belize's culture. The local Mennonite community at Blue Creek allows you a rare chance to experience their traditional ranching lifestyle and although such communities are not normally on the tourism trail, Blue Creek is working to modernise this view by introducing the real lives of Belize's locals.
