The Dead Sea marks the lowest point on earth, at 420 metres below sea level. The River Jordan, where Jesus was baptised at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, is one of several rivers that flow into this large and highly saline lake. Five Biblical cities, including Sodom and Gomorrah, are believed to have stood in this area.

The salt-laden waters of the lake mean that swimmers can float freely, bobbing like a cork on its surface. As such, taking a dip in the Dead Sea has become a must-do Jordan travel experience.
