Introduction
This artificial archipelago of reclaimed land, known as Palm Jumeirah, is one of Dubai's many groundbreaking construction projects, located off Jumeirah Beach and close to Dubai Marina. It's one of Dubai's main holiday destinations.
Palm Jumeirah has an outer crescent of sand that forms an 11-kilometre breakwater, protecting the 16 palm fronds and trunk at its centre. On the sandbars are numerous luxury hotels, private villas, beaches, marinas, restaurants and designer shopping outlets. The Palm increased Dubai's shoreline by more than 500 kilometres.
The underwater-themed Atlantis, the Palm hotel is the most extravagant of the luxury hotels on Palm Jumeirah. It's official launch featured 100,000 fireworks in a show visible from Space and a VIP list with A-list celebrities from around the world.
Palm Jumeirah is the first of three Palm Islands, which extend into the Persian Gulf. The Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira are the subsequent and equally ambitious projects under development.
