Introduction
Atlanta is a dynamic and bustling city that is often touted as the gateway to the Deep South if not its capital. With a skyline of glass and steel engineering – and architectural – feats, you won’t be surprised to find out that Atlanta is a city in a constant state of progression, palpable in its infectious energy. While this is best seen in its young, creative population, you’ll also find dynamism in everything from the whitewashed curves of the High Museum of Art to Grant Park, host to flamingos, elephants and even tigers.
But, as the birthplace of MLK, it’s also a city with a fabled modern history. Start with the excellent Martin Luther King Historic Site where the work and legacy of the great civil rights leader are presented in a series of superb exhibitions. Elsewhere, you’ll even be able to visit his childhood home. More commercially, Pemberton Place is host to three of Atlanta’s largest attractions – the World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Aquarium and the CNN Centre, which takes you behind the scenes of one of the nation’s leading news sources.
Aside from family days out, the city also offers excellent shopping opportunities and a restaurant scene informed by classic Southern favourites and international migrants alike. There’s also every opportunity to experience America’s love of sport with Turner Field ballpark, home of the Atlanta Braves, and the Georgia Dome where NFL outfit Atlanta Falcons ply their trade.
